Deep Cleaning vs. Routine Housekeeping: Which Does Your Home Need?

One of the first questions we're asked is whether someone needs a deep clean or just regular cleaning. It's a fair question, because from the outside they can look alike. They aren't two prices for the same job, though. A deep clean resets a home; routine housekeeping keeps it at that standard.

A deep clean is the detailed, top-to-bottom visit. It reaches the build-up everyday cleaning doesn't: grease on the range hood and cabinet fronts, the inside of the microwave, scale on shower glass and fixtures, grime in the grout, and dust on baseboards, door frames, ceiling fans, vent covers and light fixtures. It takes longer, because every surface is being brought back to clean rather than kept clean.

Routine housekeeping is lighter and faster by design. On a weekly, bi-weekly or monthly schedule, the kitchen is wiped down, bathrooms are cleaned and disinfected, surfaces are dusted and floors are vacuumed and mopped. Because it happens regularly, build-up never gets the chance to form — which is exactly why each visit can be quicker.

So which do you need? If your home hasn't had a professional clean in the last few months, start with a deep clean. Going straight into routine visits on a home with months of build-up means either the first few visits run long, or the build-up stays where it is and only the surface gets cleaned.

A deep clean on its own also makes sense before specific events: family coming to stay for the holidays, putting a house on the market, a new baby or a new pet, or the end of a renovation. It's worth doing once or twice a year even with routine service, to catch the areas that regular visits rotate through rather than cover every time.

Routine housekeeping makes sense once a home is at a good baseline and you want it to stay there. Weekly suits busy households with kids and pets. Bi-weekly is the most common choice and keeps most homes in good shape. Monthly works for smaller homes, or for people who keep on top of the day-to-day themselves.

The pattern that works best for most homes is simple: one deep clean first, then routine housekeeping at whatever frequency fits your life. The deep clean sets the standard, and the routine visits hold it.
